Updates are supported on RHEL 6u1, 6u2, 6u3; RHEL 5u6, 5u7, 5u8; SLES 11.0, 11.1, 11.2, and SLES 10.3, 10.4; 1.2 Limitations - None 1.3 Problems fixed: - See change history for more details. 1.4 Level of Recommendations and Prerequisites for the update: - The latest device driver must be installed before installing this update. 1.5 Dependencies - The Brocade FC and NIC version 3.2.4.0 (or later) driver updates must be installed prior to running this update. A reboot is required after installing the drivers. - The Brocade bcu utility is required to install this bootcode update. Bcu is automatically installed by the FC and NIC driver packages, but is generally not included with in-distro drivers, and is not installed by the DUD. Failure to reboot may result in a message indicating the device driver is not loaded or the HBA/CNA device is not found. 2.1 Automated Installation instructions --------------------------------------- This package can be used with several of IBM's update management tools to provide a fully automated installation, including IBM UpdateXpress Manager, IBM UpdateXpress System Packs, and IBM Director. Please refer to the instructions that came with the specific management tool you are using for details. 2.2 Standalone usage instructions --------------------------------- As a standalone package, this executable can be used in the following ways: - to update the Brocade FW (bootcode) on the local system. - to copy (extract) all files necessary for the update to the local hard drive or other media. Updating the local system: 1) Type "./brcd_fw_cna_3.2.4.0_linux_32-64.bin -s" at a command prompt. Extracting files 1) Type "./brcd_fw_cna_3.2.4.0_linux_32-64.bin -x ", where is the fully qualified path where you want to extract the files, at a command prompt. 2.3 Troubleshooting tips ------------------------ - Return/error code information is generally suppressed by the automated installation process. If you experience an unsuccessful installation, try extracting the package contents to the hard driver and manually running the install script. - An installation log is written by this update to /var/log/IBM_Support. The log will contain any error codes that were generated during the update. - To ensure that this update will load successfully, it is strongly recommended that you first install version 3.2.4.0 FC and NIC (or later) drivers, reboot the server, and then proceed with the bootcode update. These packages install a utility called "bcu" which is required by this update. - Ensure that the bcu utility is loaded and functioning. From a command prompt, type "bcu adapter --list". This should produce a list of installed FC and CNA adapters. If the command results in an error message indicating bcu is not found or driver is not installed, you need to install the Brocade FC and NIC driver UX updates and reboot before installing this bootcode update. - In-distro device drivers may not be compatible with this bootcode update, and usually don't include the bcu utility. It is very important that you "override" the in-distro drivers. By default, in-distro device drivers are not updated by UX packages, which can result in a driver/bcu-utility version mismatch. Such a condition will prevent the installation of this bootcode update. This may be identified by error code 163 in the bootcode update log. Code 163 may also result from installing an FC driver and a NIC driver from different versions. To resolve a mismatch error, rerun the FC and NIC driver package installations, ensuring that you (in the GUI tool) "install the new driver even if the drivers are 'native to the linux distribution'" (i.e. in-distro) option, or (on the commandline) use the "-o" option. This will "override" the in-distro driver. Please refer to the readme instructions specific to your installation tool for details on how to override in-distro drivers. 2.4 Verifying the Update ------------------------ To verify successful bootcode update, please examine the log file created by this update. The update can also be verified by running the following from a command prompt: bcu adapter --query Where "ID" is the number for the adapter you wish to check. (The command "bcu adapter --list" will show the ID numbers.) The adapter query will generate a listing of the current settings and attributes for the chosen adapter. Near the bottom of the listing, you should find information similar to the following: Flash Information: status: good fw version: 3.2.4.0 bios version: FCHBA3.2.4.0 This indicates that the current "firmware" version (loaded by the device driver) is "3.2.4.0". The "firmware" version should always match the device driver version. The query also indicates that the current "bootcode/BIOS" version (which is updated by this package) is "FCHBA3.2.4.0". The example given above indicates a successful installation of bootcode 3.2.4.0. 3.0 Configuration information ______________________________ Return Codes set by this package: 0: No errors detected.
